Archaeological Area of Tula


Tollan-Xicocotitlan was the capital of the Toltec state, which developed in central Mexico during the early post-classic period of Mesoamerica. In this city he was settled the main political power of the valleys of Mexico and Puebla-Tlaxcala between the X and XII centuries AD. His influence reached as far away as the Yucatan Peninsula, El Salvador and Nicaragua places.

 Not to be confused with the mythological place called Tollan, whose identification with Tollan-Xicocotitlan has been questioned in recent texts.
The remains of this pre-Columbian city is located in the town of Tula de Allende, south of the state of Hidalgo (Mexico), and are part of Tula National Park.

The remains of Tollan-Xicocotitlan are the archaeological zone of Tula, about ten minutes by bus from the center of Tula de Allende. In turn, the archaeological site is part of Tula National Park, a protected natural area. There are two architectural complexes that are the main attraction of Tula.
The most important is known as Tula Grande, comprising the largest structures in the city, corresponding to Phase Tollan.

Tula Chico is located five and a half kilometers to the northeast, and consists of a plaza and other buildings that were the nucleus from which grew the capital of the Toltecs.
